Hawks take season opener

Langston Galloway

On Monday evening, after an offseason of anticipation and build-up, the 2012-2013 Saint Joseph's Hawks tipped off the season. The Hawks knocked off the Yale Bulldogs 61-35 behind a game-high 20 points from junior guard Langston Galloway.

Monday evening's ballgame at Hagan Arena, between the Saint Joseph's Hawks and the Yale Bulldogs looked like an early-season game. The Hawks held Yale to under 40 points en route to their 26-point win.

Going into the game, it was evident that the Hawks would have a significant advantage over Yale in the front court, and they certainly did. Juniors Ron Roberts and Halil Kanacevic each posted double-doubles, and the Hawks out-rebounded the Bulldogs 39-29 on the game.

Another significant discrepancy came at the free-throw line. The Hawks attempted 30 foul shots, compared to only 7 for Yale. While the Hawks easily took care of business, the size of the margin could have been greater had they capitalized on their free throws. They only shot 16-30 from the line.

A sloppy first half saw the Hawks take a 25-15 lead into the locker room. In the second half, Yale kept it close, until the Hawks put together a 17-0 run that extended an 8-point lead into 25.

While he struggled from the field, sophomore point guard Chris Wilson played 36 minutes of turnover-free basketball. Junior forward C.J. Aiken, while saddled with foul trouble, chipped in 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 21 minutes.

The Hawks return to the hardwood on Friday. At 9:30 Friday night, the Hawks will face off against Notre Dame at the new Barclay's Center in Brooklyn as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Freshman forward Isaiah Miles scored his first points in a Hawk uniform late in the second half, when he knocked down a baseline 12-footer. Miles also chipped in an assist and a rebound in his four minutes of action. Stay tuned to Hawk Hill Hardwood this week for our final Player Profiles, a Notre Dame preview, and in all likelihood, some recruiting news as the early signing period is only a day away.
